To enhance the mangrove project, Villagers can create a sustainable eco-tourism route for local and international tourism. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves, engage tourists in conservation efforts, and contribute to generate revenue to continue ongoing the restoration mangrove projects. Hence we are introducing the implementation of The Mangrove's Eco-Tourism Experiencie Route.
The Solution
The village can harness the potential of eco-tourism to create a positive impact on both the local community and the environment. Through responsible tourism practices, the village can promote cultural heritage, protect the mangrove ecosystem, and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
The eco-tourism route aims to co-design and implement artisan routes, strengthen embroidery culture, promote traditional gastronomy, and manage the construction of tourist landmarks. By preserving tangible and intangible heritage, this project seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of local communities while enhancing cultural identity and promoting responsible tourism.
How it works?
Creating the Eco-Tourism Route: The villagers, who have firsthand knowledge of their local environment and culture, actively participate in creating the eco-tourism route. They identify points of interest within the mangrove ecosystem, design nature trails, and plan activities that showcase their unique cultural heritage. This involvement ensures an authentic and immersive experience for tourists.
Support and Training from Hotel Enterprises: To elevate the tourism experience and ensure its sustainability, hotel enterprises provide support and training to the villagers. This may include training in hospitality, customer service, and eco-tourism best practices. The hotel enterprises share their expertise to enhance the overall visitor experience and create a high standard for the eco-tourism route.
Desingning Eco-Tour Packages: Design guided eco-tourism packages that offer an immersive and educational experience for visitors and that showcase the beauty and ecological significance of mangroves. The tours may include:
Boat rides through the mangroves
Employ local guides trained in mangrove ecology and conservation to provide informative narratives
Birdwatching
Hands-on activities like planting mangrove saplings and fishing to raise awareness in visitors about the importance of this natural ecosystem
Gastronomy cooking experience
Marketing Support: The hotel enterprises also contribute to marketing efforts, promoting the eco-tourism experience to their existing customer base and beyond. Their marketing resources and networks help attract a wider audience and increase the visibility of the village as an eco-tourism destination.
Setting a Price and Revenue Generation: Together, the villagers and hotel enterprises set an appropriate price for the eco-tourism experience. The revenue generated from ticket sales and other tourism activities is then shared between the villagers and the hotel enterprises, providing a sustainable income stream for both parties.
Eco-Tourism Revenue Allocation for Funding for Mangrove Restoration: Allocate a portion of the revenue generated from each eco-tour directly to mangrove restoration funding. Transparently communicate to tourists that their participation in eco-tourism contributes to the conservation and restoration efforts in the mangrove areas they visit.
Sustainable Practices: Implement sustainable tourism practices during the eco-tours to minimise the impact on the mangrove ecosystems. Enforce guidelines such as limiting group sizes, using eco-friendly boats, and educating tourists about responsible behavior to protect the delicate mangrove environment.
Environmental Awareness and Education: Use the eco-tours as an opportunity to raise awareness and educate tourists about the significance of mangroves in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. Encourage visitors to become ambassadors for mangrove conservation.
Key Benefits of This Idea:
Empowering Villagers: The villagers actively participate in the eco-tourism initiative, gaining a sense of ownership and pride in showcasing their culture and environment to visitors.
Sustainable Income Source: The eco-tourism experience provides a sustainable income source for the villagers, contributing to the economic well-being of the community.
Environmental Conservation: The generated revenue funds the ongoing mangrove restoration program, ensuring the conservation and protection of the valuable mangrove ecosystem.
Collaborative Approach: The partnership between the villagers and hotel enterprises fosters a collaborative and mutually beneficial effort, promoting responsible tourism and benefiting both parties involved.
What role should the Government play in this project?
The Ministry of Tourism from the Government of Tabasco's State could support our project, but relying solely on the government might not be guaranteed. So, we need to take charge and create a transformative initiative to enhance tourism in our community. By working collaboratively with the government, local stakeholders, and community members, we aim to develop a sustainable tourism strategy that highlights our unique cultural heritage and natural beauty. Through this initiative, we seek to create opportunities for local businesses, empower our community, and attract responsible tourists who value our culture and environment. Let's promote responsible tourism practices, ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future while preserving our environment for generations to come. Together, we can build a tourism industry that enriches our cultural heritage and fosters a sense of pride and ownership in our village.
Potential Outcomes:
Increased awareness and appreciation of mangroves' ecological importance among tourists and the local community.
Sustainable funding for ongoing mangrove restoration and conservation projects.
Enhanced community livelihoods and engagement in environmental conservation.
Positive impacts on the ecological health and resilience of mangrove ecosystems.
By combining mangrove restoration with sustainable eco-tourism, this initiative fosters a mutually beneficial relationship between conservation, education, and local economic development. It serves as a model for responsible and community-driven eco-tourism initiatives that contribute to the protection and preservation of valuable coastal ecosystems.
This is an amazing idea because it empowers the community (give a sense of a local pride), preserve local culture and would even spread the awareness about Paraiso internationally. What can be improved from this idea is the impact measurement - is it worth having people coming from around the world, which probably emit more carbon, generate more waste (and even more carbon to manage the waste) locally... as compared to the positive outcome (carbon from the mangrove planted, cultural awareness raised, etc). It can be an interesting calculation to research about (and another way to market the eco-tourism, if turns out good).
do you have international tourists? you should consider language interpreter or translator
good approach feasible and profitable
what could be another potentially route to design and develop, beside the mangrove route?
